Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink is staying at Burton Albion despite having talks with Barnsley regarding their vacant managerial role, as per the club's website.

The Dutchman has enjoyed a successful second spell with the Brewers so far, coming in to save the club from what looked like a destined relegation in 2020/21 and backing up that achievement with a 16th placed finish in 2021/22.

The Brewers have not been able to compete financially with the larger clubs in the third tier since coming down from the Championship and therefore consolidation and competing towards mid table is seen as success at the moment.

Here, we have taken a look at three knock-on effects of Hasselbaink's decision to remain the Brewers' manager heading into 2022/23...

Defence first football will remain in place

Even though he was a deadly striker in his pomp, Hasselbaink is very cautious tactically and puts far more importance on being well-drilled defensively.

This is arguably the smartest approach given how Burton have to operate in the transfer market, but it can make for some dour viewing for supporters.

Burton have had some eye-catching attacking players in recent years, but it has been difficult for them to flourish due to their back foot approach.

Further scrutiny will be on results

It is known that Hasselbaink has been the subject of interest to clubs higher up the League One food chain.

This may see the 50-year-old's results scrutinised further, with the chances increasing that he is linked with a move away, should jobs become available at the bottom of the Championship or elsewhere in the third tier in the opening months of the campaign.

Recruitment will continue as planned

It would have been interesting to monitor which direction the Brewers would have headed in, had they been looking for a replacement for Hasselbaink.

A new manager with fresh ideas would have wanted to target a certain type of player in the summer window, to suit the style of play they were aiming to implement at the Pirelli Stadium.

Hasselbaink staying means that Burton can simply carry on with their original plans that would have already been drawn up in preparation for 2022/23.
