3 key players from Plymouth Argyle vs Cambridge United

After a dodgy first three games, Plymouth Argyle have hit the competition for six in recent weeks – Saturday’s 2-1 win over Cambridge United their sixth win in all competitions on the bounce.

A narrow 2-1 win away at Notts County was the result that got them going, followed by a 2-0 win at home to Mansfield before an impressive 1-0 win at Blackpool. They beat Newport 4-1 in the EFL Trophy before returning to league action at Home Park in September by beating Cheltenham 1-0 and then the U’s 2-1.

They had gone 422 league minutes without conceding before Medy Elito got a consolation for Shaun Derry’s side on Saturday, and are now looking solid at the back, dangerous going forward and have surged from bottom to top of the early league table in just four games.

In this encounter, it was an exhibition from the Pilgrims for most of the game. Star player Graham Carey put Argyle ahead after nine minutes by firing into the top corner from Ben Purrington’s pin point cut back from the by-line. Jordan Slew deserved credit for that goal by beating his man out on the left hand side in the build-up, and got on the score-sheet himself in the second half by tapping in Craig Tanner’s cross from the right at the back post.

The scoring wasn’t over as Elito netted the consolation, capitalising on a lapse in concentration from the Argyle midfield and defence. Cambridge should be given some credit; they performed well and gave the Pilgrims a real scare late on, and forced Luke McCormick into two excellent saves.

Here, in the opinion of FLW’s Ryan Evans, are the THREE key players from Saturday’s match…
