Huddersfield Town will be aiming to ensure that they manage to secure their safety in the Championship before the end of the campaign, with the Terriers sitting just five points clear of the relegation zone.

Danny Cowley could be facing some key decisions during the summer, if he can first manage to ensure he guides Huddersfield to safety, with the Terriers needing to invest further in the transfer market to help him build a squad that could be capable of challenging further up the table next term.

There will also be some decisions to be made over the futures of some of Huddersfield’s players whose contracts will be set to come to an end when the season finishes, and Cowley will be needing to assess which of those players have the potential to remain at the club and make a difference next campaign.

Here then, we take a look at THREE key decisions Cowley could be faced ahead of the summer…

Whether to offer a new deal to Danny Simpson

One really important decision that will be facing Cowley is whether or not to offer Simpson a new deal to keep him with the Terriers for next season, and there is a case that the defender has demonstrated he could still have plenty to offer for Huddersfield beyond the end of the campaign.

Simpson was brought in by the Terriers on a deal until the end of the season, to help provide some added depth and experience in Huddersfield’s defence, and the 33-year-old has managed to establish himself as a key member of Cowley’s side making 19 appearances so far in the Championship.

Cowley will therefore be needing to decide whether he feels Simpson could continue to play a key role for the club at right-back next season, or if he would be wanting to bring in a more younger option with the potential to be developed, like he has done down the left-hand side with the addition of Harry Toffolo.

Whether to offer Collin Quaner a new deal

Another important decision facing Cowley in the summer will be whether he feels that Quaner has done enough to earn himself a new deal with the club, and that could well depend on how quickly the forward is able to make an impression on the side when he finally makes a return from injury.

Quaner is yet to make an appearance for the Terriers under Cowley, having been ruled out of action since the second match of the season due to a long-term issue with his hip, and that means the 28-year-old has been unable to make an impression after he returned to the club last summer after spending time out on loan at Ipswich Town.

The striker, though, could potentially be nearing a return to first team action and could even be available to return against Swansea City this weekend – and if he can return and perform well in the last stages of the season then he will give Cowley something to think about.

Whether to activate the option on Elias Kachunga’s deal

Cowley will be facing decisions over whether to activate the options of an extension to the contracts of five players in the summer, including Joel Coleman, Ryan Schofield, Demeaco Duhaney and Jon Gorenc Stankovic, but perhaps the toughest decision will be over the option available on Kachunga’s deal.

The forward has continued to be a key performer for Huddersfield since Cowley took charge of the club, and Kachunga’s versatility of being able to play up front and down the right-hand side makes him a useful option for the Terriers, which could well be needed next campaign.

However, Kachunga has not been able to offer much in the way of productivity in the final third this term, having only registered two goals and three assists in 29 Championship appearances so far, which could raise doubts over whether Huddersfield should allow him to leave and look for a more reliable creator and goalscorer in the summer.
