Following a dismal end to the previous campaign, Stoke City would have been hoping to make a bright start the current term in the Championship under the guidance of manager Nathan Jones.

However, this unfortunately hasn't been the case as the Potters have been desperately poor during the opening months of the season.

Given that his side are in the relegation zone in the second-tier, it is hardly surprising that Jones is under a great deal of pressure to deliver the goods at the bet365 Stadium.

According to The Sun (As cited by HITC), Stoke are reportedly considering a move for former Reading boss Jose Gomes.

If this is indeed true, it could be argued that the Potters may find it beneficial to look elsewhere for a new manager.

Keeping this in mind, here are three alternatives to Gomes that Stoke should be eyeing up if they do sack Jones...

Gareth Ainsworth

Since taking over at Wycombe Wanderers in 2012, Gareth Ainsworth has completely transformed the club's fortunes.

After leading the Chairboys to promotion in 2018, the 46-year-old helped them maintain their League One status last season.

Having experienced a superb start to the current campaign in the third-tier which has resulted in his side climbing up to second in the standings, Ainsworth could turn out to be the ideal appointment for Stoke.

Karl Robinson

Although it is safe to say that Karl Robinson did not get off to the best of starts at Oxford United, he has since managed to take the club to new heights this season in League One.

Currently on an eight-game unbeaten run in the third-tier, the Yellows will be determined to push on over the coming months under the guidance of the 39-year-old.

If Robinson continues to impress at the Kassam Stadium, Stoke should consider making a move for him as he may be able to galvanise a squad which is bereft of confidence at the moment.

Nigel Adkins

No stranger to the Championship, Nigel Adkins has managed a number of different teams at this particular level of football.

During his most recent spell with Hull City, the 54-year-old guided the club to a 13th place finish in the second-tier last season before opting to leave the KCOM Stadium upon the expiry of his contract in June.

Given that he knows exactly what it takes to compete in the Championship, Adkins may turn out to be a shrewd appointment by Stoke if they are to cut ties with Jones in the not too distant future.
