Derby County are in the midst of a wonderful run of form, with Gary Rowett’s side emerging as key contenders for a playoff spot in recent weeks.

The Rams are on fire and are certainly one of the form sides of the league, and those associated with the East Midlands outfit may also begin to believe that automatic promotion could be within the realms of possibility.

The January transfer window could make all the difference for Rowett, with the month providing the former Birmingham City boss the final opportunity to bolster his squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Several new players could be needed, and Rowett should look to target these men in the new year…

Alfredo Morelos

Derby are in need of another goal scorer in the new year, and the 21-year-old Colombian could prove to be the perfect addition to the frontline.

Morelos has performed remarkably for Rangers in the SPL since arriving from Finnish side HJK in the summer, and could be set for yet another move.

The South American is a top young talent with bags of potential, and Rowett would do well to ensure he is at the front of the line when the transfer window opens for business.

Rangers won’t want to sell, but lack the funds to be able to fend off big-money offers, and Rowett will have cash in the reserves.

The player could prove a revelation at Pride Park.

James Tavernier

Sticking with Glasgow Rangers, Derby should consider a swoop for former Newcastle United man Tavernier.

The full-back has been sensational for the Gers since moving north of the border, and has proven himself as an adept defender as well as a goal scorer.

A bombarding right-sided defender with the engine to get up and down the touchline, Tavernier would represent a wonderful addition to the squad at Pride Park, and would allow Rowett to consider shifting Andre Wisdom into a more central role.

Tavernier would add a new dimension to the Rams at the back and going forward, and the squad would be boosted by his arrival.

Maikel Kieftenbeld

Derby almost tied up a deal for the Dutchman in the summer, before a deal fell through at the last minute due to paperwork failing to be submitted on time.

The 27-year-old will remain keen to secure a switch to Pride Park, and with current club Birmingham City currently languishing at the foot of the table, Kieftenbeld would jump at an opportunity to escape the dire situation at St Andrew’s.

Rowett needs another option in the middle of the park, and with the manager fully aware of the player’s ability having almost secured a deal for him several months ago, a move for the Dutchman makes a lot of sense.
