Wigan Athletic host high-flying Nottingham Forest on Sunday hoping to extend their unbeaten run at the DW Stadium to four matches.

The Latics have started the season in a similar fashion to how they started the last. Solid at home, poor away. Paul Cook’s side have picked up good home wins against Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic, however, have registered just one point away from home, following a 2-2 draw at Hull City.

The ultimate aim last season was to avoid relegation, Wigan did that comfortably, finishing 18th. Now, the fans are demanding progress and a solution to their poor away form.

Here, we have a look at three things that Cook must address ASAP...

Find Jamal Lowe’s best position

Wigan finally completed the signing of Jamal Lowe from Portsmouth in the summer,  a deal which allowed the attacker a chance to be reunited with Cook as they worked together at Fratton Park.

The 25-year-old is yet to register a goal or assist for Wigan, yet fans are happy to be patient with the former Pompey man. This is Lowe’s first experience of Championship football, and Wigan fans know as well as anyone that the step-up in quality from League One, is very tough to adapt to.

Cook has opted to use Lowe in various positions, although it seems the attacker is most effective when playing on the right of midfield.

Win an away game

Wigan have won just two of 28 away games since returning to the Championship, after winning the 2017/18 League One title.

The Latics have visions of pushing on this season and finishing mid-table. To achieve that, their away form simply has to improve.

Cook’s side have picked up just one point from their opening five away matches, so there’s no signs of improvement from the last campaign. With Wigan fans growing frustrated, the Latics manager must find a solution, quickly.

Get Michael Jacobs back to full form

Wigan are a better side when Jacobs is playing his best football. Since signing for the club in 2015, Jacobs has scored 30 goals.

The former Wolves man offers a direct threat, plays in various positions and plays a pivotal role in a Wigan balanced side.

This season, Jacobs has registered just one goal so far. Cook needs to find a way of getting Jacobs back to playing his best football, which will make Wigan a better team.
