The past couple of seasons for Ipswich Town in the Championship have been agonising for their fans as their club has flirted with promotion to the Premier League but just failed to pull off the feat under manager Mick McCarthy.

Last season saw the Tractor Boys finished in a respectable but gut-wrenching 7th place just one place and 5 points outside the Championship Play-Off positions. It was once again a case of so near yet so far for Ipswich.

McCarthy has been given another season by owner Marcus Evans to try and get Ipswich back to the Premier League for the first time since 2002. Can he go one better than their 2014/15 efforts when they were knocked out in the Championship Play-Off Semi Finals after finishing 6th?

There is no denying the quality now present within the Ipswich Town squad but which three players should you be looking out for next season? Football League World writer Steve Day gives his three players he expects to make a huge impact in 2016/17.

Luke Chambers

The club captain has become the most influential figure at Portman Road since he first joined the club from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest back in 2012. Over the course of four years he has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet and is the inspirational lynch pin in the Ipswich back-line.

In 2012/13, Chambers was a key player in a run of 12 clean sheets in the final 22 games of the Championship league season. He has now become a popular player with the fans and has become the individual that McCarthy has built his defence around.

If Ipswich are to launch an assault on the promotion spots this season then Chambers will need to enjoy a vintage season. He is 30 years of age meaning he has a wealth of experience but still has years left to play at centre back.

Jonas Knudsen

Danish international full back Knudsen enjoyed a very impressive first season with Ipswich in the Championship last season after his move to the Suffolk club from Danish SuperLiga side Esbjerg fB on 31st July, 2015.

The 23-year-old is still one of the youngest full backs playing at this level in English football but is already considered one of the best in his position outside of the Premier League and is set to only improve as he plays more and adapts to the style of football the Championship delivers week in and week out.

It is Knudsen's comparison to Rory Delap due to his long throwing ability that has set tongues wagging in England and even though he might not contribute much on the goals front he is a more than capable defender, and his throw-ins provide enough damage at the other end of the pitch that he can be a threat in attack as well.

Adam Webster

This final player on the list is a controversial one. Webster is the £750,000 centre back signing from League Two side Portsmouth. He was one of the stand-out players for Pompey last season as his club reached the League Two Play-Off Semi Finals. However, their failure to earn promotion triggered McCarthy's interest in the youngster.

Webster is a 21-year-old former England Under-19 international who has heaps of potential. It is clear McCarthy has big plans for the towering defender judging by the fee paid and this season could be when he is announced on the Championship stage.

The only potential issue is that Webster must compete with club captain Chambers and the popular duo of Christophe Berra and Tommy Smith to earn a regular first team start for the Tractor Boys. If he can force his way into the first team picture at Portman Road then it could be the start of a glittering career for the highly-rated starlet.
