John Marquis scored his first goal in seven on Saturday, giving Portsmouth a 2-1 win over Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup Third Round.

With 22 goals in League One for Doncaster last season, expectations were high for Marquis when he penned a move to Pompey.

He'd been one of the divisions most prolific goal-scorers but it's not quite worked out at Fratton Park so far, and after the midway point in the season he's only on five goals in all competitions.

His fifth came on Saturday and an important one it was. Kenny Jackett's side travelled up to north to face League One rivals Fleetwood, and after James Bolton put Pompey ahead in the second-half, Marquis doubled the lead soon after with what would prove to be the winning goal.

Conor McAleny scored a consolation goal for Joey Barton's Fleetwood in injury time, but it wasn't enough to prevent Portsmouth from progressing into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.

Marquis, 27, played the full-ninety on Saturday, the first time he's done so for Portsmouth since his side's 2-2 draw with Peterborough at the start of last month.

His dry form in-front of goal has made him a back-up striker under Jackett but with a goal yesterday and an overall solid performance, he might be given more of a run-out when Pompey travel to Walsall in the EFL Trophy play-offs tomorrow.

Here's the stats from Marquis' performance yesterday:

Portsmouth currently sit 10th in League One. Their season started dismally and Jackett was a man under real pressure for a long time. But with the wins now coming in and the points tally getting gradually higher, Portsmouth are now readying a top-six push with just one point separating them from Peterborough in 6th.

Marquis has pedigree at this level but Pompey fans are yet to see the best of him - perhaps after a solid performance at the weekend, he'll kick-start his season and push his side into Championship contention.
