Reading confirmed the signing of Arsenal goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, on a season-long loan deal on Wednesday.
It’s another promising signing for the Royals, who have had some high-profile additions to their squad this month, with both Nelson Oliveira and Lewis Baker both arriving earlier this month.
Jose Gomes is certainly making his mark on this Reading squad, and supporters will be hoping that he can be the man to guide the Royals out of the relegation zone in the near future.
Martinez hasn’t played much first-team football in his recent loan spells, and will hope that he can make a positive impact on this Reading squad going forward.
Arsenal are hoping that the shot-stopper will gain valuable experience this year, in the hope that he can challenge Bernard Leno for a starting spot with the Gunners next season, following Petr Cech’s retirement at the end of this years campaign.
But what impacts could Martinez’s arrival have on Reading this season?
Find out below…..
It could spell the end of Vito Mannone’s time at Reading
Mannone has already been linked with a move away from the Madejski Stadium this season after falling out of favour in Jose Gomes’ squad.
He is far too good of an option to be sat on the substitutes bench with Reading, and with Mannone now fourth choice goalkeeper, it all but ends his time at the club.
He could be the ideal addition to suit Gomes’ style of play
Jose Gomes has been keen to put his own stamp on this squad, and his possession based style of play has already shown promising signs in the early stages of his management in Berkshire.
Martinez certainly suits that style of play, and compared to the other goalkeepers Gomes has available to him, there is no questioning that Martinez is the best goalkeeper with the ball at his feet.
It’s the ideal signing for the newly appointed Royals boss.
It’s a huge boost for the Reading supporters
Martinez arrives from another reputable club, and it shows that Gomes can attract high quality players to Reading despite them being in a relegation battle.
Many would have thought that the Reading boss would struggle to attract the best players to the club in the predicament they are currently in, so it’s hugely promising for Royals supporters.
If they can retain their Championship status, then the possibilities are endless in future seasons surely?
