It was a damaging Yorkshire derby for Leeds United at the weekend, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side losing 1-0 to Sheffield United at Elland Road.

Leeds dominated large parts of the game and created plenty of chances, but again, Bielsa’s side weren’t clinical enough and Chris Basham’s goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Kiko Casilla’s late red card added to Leeds’ woe, whilst Pontus Jansson picked up a knee injury.

And, Leeds have confirmed today that Jansson will be out of action for three weeks, with the centre-back now a major doubt for the games against Millwall and Birmingham City the other side of the international break.

Jansson has been a superb, commanding figure for much of the season, with the Swede a regular in Bielsa’s defence.

Here, we take a look at three impacts his setback will have on Leeds…

A nervous wait

Leeds have claimed Jansson will be out for three weeks, with the club’s next fixture in 12 days when Millwall travel to Elland Road.

As things stand it seems unlikely that Jansson will be featuring in that game, but things can change.

Bielsa will be waiting nervously to see if his best centre-back is fit enough to play some part straight after the international break.

A chance for Gaetano Berardi

Berardi started the season alongside Liam Cooper at centre-back, with Jansson forced to watch on from the bench.

Injuries have since ruled Berardi out for much of the season, but he’s back and likely to step in for Jansson.

It’s on him to step up.

A tough afternoon against Millwall

Jansson is good in the air and a real leader for this Leeds side and his presence will be missed, particularly against Millwall.

The Lions will play a direct game and put the Leeds centre-backs under pressure.

Not having Jansson there would be a kick in the teeth for the home side.
