Young players have started to come through the Cardiff youth system at an accelerated rate, after former owner Sam Hammam invested heavily in the academy set-up at the Welsh club, but as the financial strains attached to the club have tightened, the funding in youth at the club has weakened.

This has now meant that a youth system that previously produced such players as Aaron Ramsey, Joe Ledley, James Collins, Adam Matthews, and Chris Gunter has now seen a reduced number of players successfully making the leap from the development squad to the first team squad.

In the current first team squad, only Declan John made his way through the Bluebirds youth set-up to earn promotion to the first team.

Players such as Joe Ralls, Kadeem Harris, and Ben Wilson spent time in the development side, but in a stance that sums up Cardiff's approach to youth talent right now, these players were signed from the developmental sides of other clubs.

However, there are a number of starlets trying to make their mark in the Cardiff youth set-up right now, who could go on to become the next big thing for the Welsh club.

Football League World writer Steve Day identifies THREE hidden gems that are currently involved with the club right now.....

Tommy O'Sullivan

O'Sullivan is arguably the most highly-rated player on this list having been awarded the FAW Young Player of the Year for 2014/15 and is currently a regular starting player for the Wales Under-21 side.

The 21 year old is set to make a league appearance for the Bluebirds but is on the brink of being involved in the first team, having been a pivotal member of the development side for a number of years now.

He spent the 2015/16 season out on loan with League Two club Newport County where he received praise from fans and pundits alike for his performances on the pitch.

He made 20 starts for the Exiles in the league and the Bluebirds have chosen to retain the Mountain Ash-born box-to-box midfielder for the 2016/17 season.

Tom James

The last centre back to really impress from the Cardiff City youth academy was Wales international Collins who has gone on to play for Premier League clubs West Ham and Aston Villa, having also represented his country 50 times.

Finally, there is a potential future star in 20 year old James who is Cardiff born and bred.

The youngster was given a taste of the high life by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who handed James a debut on 11th May, 2014 when Cardiff played Chelsea in the Premier League in a 2-1 defeat.

Unfortunately, James has not been given much more opportunity to show what he can do at the club but has remained an integral part of the club's development side putting in game after game of positive performances.

His involvement with the Wales Under-19s shows he is rated by those in the Welsh set-up and he is now just waiting to have that opportunity to shine in the Bluebirds first team.

Rhys Abbruzzese

This 18- year-old full back is one of the most exciting talents in the Cardiff youth academy.

He has been an ever present throughout the years in the Wales squad set-ups having played for his country in the Victory Shield and going on to represent Wales at Under-19 level as well.

Having signed for the Bluebirds at just 9 years old he has grown up playing for the club, and the Aberdare-born defender will be keen to make a push over the coming years to break into the Cardiff first team.

Abbruzzese has won plaudits from academy coaches and his team mates for the manner in which he approaches each game with a level of maturity beyond his years, and an attitude that is full of heart and determination.

Big things are expected of this lad over the coming years.
