Not many managerial stints in Championship history are as bad as Gianfranco Zola’s time at Birmingham.

Gary Rowett was boss at the Blues and was doing a great job, but the board strangely sacked him.

In fact, Rowett’s side were sitting eighth in the table upon his dismissal.

Ex-Watford boss and Chelsea legend Gio Zola took the reigns at St Andrews to wide debate in the press.

From the very first minute, Zola was on the back foot, and the players weren’t on his side.

After a terrible run, Zola was sacked and Birmingham haven’t really recovered since.

Here, we look at the 3 worst moments of his tenure.

The last moment was probably Zola’s worst – his side were played off the park by a below-par Burton side at the Pirelli Stadium.

The result put Birmingham into 20th place in the table, and Zola almost instantaneously resigned after the game.

When Zola took over, expectations were low, and his side got off to a terrible start when Brighton defeated them with what was one of the last kicks of the game.

Birmingham had played well, but Zola had changed the system from what Rowett used, and this was the start of the end for the Italian at Birmingham.

In truth, Zola had little chance. The Birmingham Mail reported that the players were ‘fuming’ when Rowett told them he had been sacked.

Zola entered the job with all the players having no faith in him, which is a toxic environment to try and win over.

The phrase ‘lost the dressing room’ applied before he had even started.
