Middlesbrough travel to Championship rivals Preston in the League Cup tonight but it's fair to say that Tony Pulis' focus will be on the Championship.

Boro have enjoyed a fine start to the season and currently occupy the second automatic promotion spot.

Therefore, Saturday's trip to Hull City will certainly take priority for the experienced boss, although he will still be able to field a competitive side given the depth Boro have in their squad.

In fact, Pulis might welcome this fixture as it provides him with a chance to see some of the fringe players in competitive action.

Here we look at three players who are sure to start and Deepdale and they will hope a positive display pushes them into contention for a Championship start...

The Teesside outfit have been rock solid defensively for the most part this season, so it's easy to see why deadline day signing Batth has had to be patient.

The 28-year-old is yet to make his debut for the club but that should change tonight and he will hope to show his new club what he can offer.

Similarly, the left-sided player is another who joined late in the window and hasn't been able to force his way into the side.

The on-loan Southampton man has made two substitute appearances but this seems the perfect opportunity for McQueen to make his first start.

The Northern Ireland man has not played as much as he would've liked in recent weeks but again, Pulis is understandably keen to keep a successful side going.

He recently praised the attitude of McNair and his performances in training so he is sure to start tonight and could give the manager a selection dilemma with a strong showing.
