Derby County go into their League Cup clash with Manchester United on a high after an impressive 3-1 win against Brentford in the Championship on Saturday.

The result took the Rams back into the playoff places and manager Frank Lampard will be eager to maintain that momentum with another impressive display against one of the world's biggest sides.

There have been plenty of standout players for Derby this campaign with the likes of Mason Mount, Mason Bennett and Tom Lawrence standing out in particular but there is a good chance that Lampard will want to rotate things for the match.

So here are three fringe players that must be handed a start against the Red Devils this evening...

Marriott was one of the country's standout players last season having scored 33 goals with Peterborough United but has struggled for game time so far under Lampard.

The likes of Martin Waghorn and David Nugent have been entrusted with the striker's role but Marriott needs minutes to show what he can do.

He showed last season that he is the man for the big occasion so this seems like the perfect time to start him.

Evans arrived at the iPro from Reading in the summer and was always likely to be a player to add depth rather than an instant starter.

The likes of Craig Bryson, Tom Huddlestone, Bradley Johnstone and Joe Ledley are all understandably ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment but he needs to stay match ready.

Starting him against United will give him the perfect chance to prove he is the best option they have in midfield.

Nobody is going to permanently displace Scott Carson from the number one spot at Derby County, but at 33 he may find it difficult to play every possible game.

That is why Roos must surely start for the Rams at Old Trafford.

Competition for spots is crucial in order to have a successful season and giving Roos the chance to impress and put the pressure on Carson will only make both players better.
