It has been a positive start to the season for Sunderland, with the Black Cats still unbeaten in Sky Bet League One.

The Wearside club have missed out on promotion for the last two years now, and they will undoubtedly be hoping that this season is third time lucky.

Phil Parkinson's side have picked up eight points from their first four league games, and have only conceded one goal along the way.

The signs are certainly positive for Sunderland, and Parkinson may look to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes on the 16th of October.

There are free-agents out there who are still available to sign, and Parkinson could look to scour the market and bring them in on free transfers before the window slams shut.

Here, we take a look at three free-agents that Sunderland should look to sign...

Jordan Obita

Obita is on the lookout for a new left-back following his departure from Reading, after making over 190 appearances for the Royals.

The 26-year-old is yet to find a new club, and as time goes on, Sunderland's chances of potentially landing Obita increase.

The left-back would provide competition for youngster Denver Hume and would definitely improve the squad.

Aside from Hume, Sunderland don't really have another out-and-out left-back, so it could be worth bringing in another player in that position before the end of the window.

Bringing in someone of Obita's calibre and experience would be a massive coup for Sunderland.

Jackson Irvine

Irvine is still searching for another club after leaving Hull City upon the expiration of his contract at the KCOM Stadium last term.

The Australian was a key player for the Tigers during his time at the KCOM Stadium, adding creativity from midfield and producing a series of impressive performances for the Yorkshire club.

The 27-year-old is an industrious midfielder capable of playing in behind the striker or slightly deeper, which would suit the Black Cats' style of play and formation.

It would be another big statement of intent to lure him to the Stadium of Light, and he could be a fantastic asset for the club.

Jacques Maghoma

Maghoma could be another exciting option for the Black Cats, and is another experienced player available to sign on a free transfer.

The winger scored six goals and registered five assists in 2018/19 and was a key player for Birmingham City during his time at St. Andrew's, and he still has something to offer in the EFL.

The 32-year-old can play on either flank and would add real pace to the team, and with Aiden McGeady being frozen out by Parkinson, an experienced winger like Maghoma could be a shrewd replacement.

He would definitely be worth a punt.
