Sheffield Wednesday last played in the Premier League in the 1999-2000 season, but the Owls have one of their best chances since then to get back in the top flight this season.

Carlos Carvalhal's side currently sit sixth in the table, occupying the final play-off place in what looks like being a hotly-contested race for a top-six finish.

Wednesday's emphatic win over Arsenal in the League Cup earlier this season made headlines, but their league form has also been impressive, with the team winning five of their last six outings in the Championship, including their last three.

It's crucial that the Hillsborough side keep their foot on the gas if they are to clinch promotion to the top flight for the 2016-17 campaign, so an effective transfer window is vital.

The club was busy in the summer, securing the services of top scorer Fernando Forestieri and striker Lucas Joao, while Barry Bannan and Ross Wallace both came in on free transfers.

Georgios Samaras

Samaras

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a big-money move for Jordan Rhodes and a permanent deal for Norwich City's Gary Hooper this month, but if they're looking for another goalscorer, the Owls might want to consider Greek international Georgios Samaras.

The former Manchester City and Celtic striker, who also plays as a winger, has been without a club since his contract with West Bromwich Albion was terminated by mutual consent in the summer.

There are a few fitness concerns surrounding the 30-year-old, as he missed out a move to Italian side Sampdoria after failing a medical in August, and has been rehabbing a back injury since.

However, the tall Greek is brilliant in the air, a threat in the box and has strong pace with the ball at his feet, so is a player that should suit Carvalhal's system.

Dwight Tiendalli

Dutch defender Dwight Tiendalli has been looking for a club since being released by Swansea City in the summer, and remains unattached, despite rumoured interest from Leicester City.

The 30-year-old had a brief spell in the Championship with Middlesbrough last season, but a lack of playing time under Aitor Karanka saw him return to his parent club after making just two appearances.

Despite a lack of football over the last year, Tiendalli comes with Premier League experience and a reputation as a strong tackler and pass blocker.

Carvalhal has already used seven different defenders this season, so bringing in an extra player at the back would give him more options and provide cover if one of his regular back four picked up an injury.

Kevin Nolan

The veteran midfielder has been looking for a new club since being released by West Ham United in the summer, but the 33-year-old recently insisted that he has been keeping himself in shape.

Nolan has emerged as a surprise favourite for the managerial vacancy at Leyton Orient in the last couple of days, having failed to agree a return to Bolton Wanderers earlier in the season.

Few players have as much experience as the midfielder, who has made 522 league appearances in the Premier League and Championship since making his senior debut with the Trotter in the 1999-2000 campaign, scoring 99 goals in that time.

Wednesday have been one of the strongest sides in the league defensively this season, but could certainly use Nolan's goals to help strengthen their hold on a playoff place, as well as his experience of winning promotion to the Premier League with all three of his previous clubs.
