Football clubs are always on the look out for the best bargain and there is no greater bargain in the game than a free agent, a deal where no transfer fee needs to be paid.

After the transfer window slammed shut and due to the fact that the emergency loan rule has now been abolished, a greater emphasis has been put in free transfers for clubs who still find themselves a couple of bodies short after the transfer window.

Rotherham United haven’t had the best of starts to this season’s Sky Bet Championship, and currently find themselves in the relegation places after suffering a crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at the weekend.

There are many talented players yet to find clubs for the new season and Football League World writer, Chris Strawson takes a look at three which Rotherham United should consider signing.

Federico Macheda

One free agent player that Rotherham United could potentially look to sign is former Cardiff City striker Federico Macheda who was recently released by the Welsh club.

Macheda burst onto the scene when playing for Manchester United when he scored the winner in a Premier League match against Aston Villa with a wonderful turn and then an equally wonderful finish to match, after that big things where expected of the Italian although he has failed to fulfil the potential that he showed during his early days with the English giants.

While still on the books at Old Trafford he enjoyed loan spells at the likes of Stuttgart, Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers and also Doncaster Rovers, but it was with Birmingham City where he enjoyed his most successful loan spell. During his time with Birmingham he made 18 appearances in the Championship and scored 10 goals in the process.

It is clear that the 25 year old has the ability inside him, it appears that he is just waiting for the right club and the right manager to extract that talent and get him firing consistently and if that can be done then there is no doubt that Macheda would be a real asset to any club.

Kieran Richardson

With the emergency loan market being abolished this year versatility is essential, and in Kieran Richardson they could acquire a player with bags and bags of versatility who can cover a number of positions and could be a crucial team player throughout the long hard slog that is a Sky Bet Championship.

Richardson would be an experienced option to provide cover at full back for Joe Mattock while in the past he has also shown his versatility to play in a number of different positions including left wing, right wing, central midfield and also as an attacking midfielder in the number 10 role.

Richardson started his career at Manchester United for whom he made 41 league appearances, scoring just the two goals and since then he has gone onto represent the likes of Sunderland, Fulham and the England national team, where he has earned 8 caps, scoring two goals which both came during a 2-1 victory over the United States in 2005.

Junior Hoilett

After The Millers failed to secure a deal for a striker on the last day of the transfer window they are now in desperate need of attacking players who can score goals, and in Junior Hoilett they could sign someone who is a definite goal threat.

Hoilett can play as a winger, attacking midfielder or even as a forward and would therefore also add much needed versatility into the squad which is needed for most Championship clubs after the emergency loan ruling was abolished.

Hoilett is a player with incredible pace and is someone who is excellent with the ball at his feet. He has the ability to breeze past opposing fullbacks with ease which is something The Millers have been desperately missing since the start of the season.
