Nottingham Forest have made the play-offs twice in the last six Championship seasons, while pushing for a place in the Premier League for the first time since 1999, but the team have been off the pace in the last couple of campaigns.

After finishing 14th last season, Dougie Freedman's side currently find themselves 12th in the standings, 10 points outside the play-off places.

A strong finish to the season could drag Forest back into contention, particularly if sides above them in the table lose players in the transfer window.

Freedman's options in the transfer market are limited though, with the club currently the subject of a transfer embargo, which has restricted the club to signing free agents and loan deals.

A trio of players were brought in on frees in the summer, with Matt Mills, Daniel Pinillos and Jamie Ward all arriving at the City Ground, but Forest will need to strengthen further if they are to challenge for a top-six spot this season.

Nikola Zigic

Nottingham Forest could definitely do with another goalscorer, and former Birmingham City striker Nikola Zigic has a decent record in front of goal in the Championship.

The 35-year-old netted 27 goals in three seasons for Birmingham, before being released at the end of a fruitless 2014-15 campaign.

The former Serbia international didn't play much last season and has been without a club this term, so would likely need a few weeks to get back up to speed, but his knowledge of the league must make him an option for Forest.

If Freedman's side were to make an approach for the former Valencia and Racing Santander man they might face competition, as he has recently been linked with a move to struggling Premier League side Aston Villa.

Kevin Nolan

Few current players have more experience of the English game than Kevin Nolan, with the former West Ham United player having made 522 league appearances in his club career since making his debut with Bolton Wanderers in the 1999-2000 season.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since having his contract terminated by the Hammers in the summer, despite having initially been linked with a return to Bolton, where he spent 10 years.

Given his age, being out of the game for an extended period isn't really an option, so Nolan will surely consider any offers that come his way this month, and Freedman's former link to Bolton could catch the former Trotters captain's eye.

Forest might need to move fast though, as Nolan's Championship and Premier League pedigree will make him an attractive option to a number of sides, while he's also emerged as a surprise contender for the managerial job at Leyton Orient.

Mikael Forssell

forssell

Former Finland international Mikael Forssell hasn't played in England since 2012, but he's available as a free agent after coming to the end of his contract with VfL Bochum in Germany last season.

The 34-year-old seems to be keeping himself fit despite being without a club, posting daily videos of his training sessions in Los Angeles on Twitter throughout January, presumably in a bid to catch a club's eye.

Forssell has proved reliable in front of goal throughout his career, scoring 51 times in 197 league appearances in England with Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Birmingham City and Leeds.

Forssell was a teammate of Freedman's during both players' second spells with Palace in the 2000-01 season, during which the Finnish striker scored 13 goals, so he'll certainly be a familiar name to the Forest boss, and veteran forwards like Emile Heskey and Eidur Gudjohnsen have had some success in the Championship in recent seasons.
