As the transfer window slammed shut, Coventry City fans were left feeling a little let down by their business this summer.

Releasing Aaron Martin, Reda Johnson and Aaron Phillips perplexed the fans at the time, and the sale of Romain Vincelot to Sky Bet League One rivals Bradford City was even more bizarre.

But Coventry fans were told to be patient, that signings would come, that the right players would eventually arrive.

But losing all of last season's stars seems even more nonsensical now, because Coventry simply have not replaced them.

The arrivals have mainly consisted of short-term deals and loaning in youngsters until January. There is a severe lack of experience and quality in this Coventry team, and the atmosphere surrounding the club is extremely pessimistic at the moment.

Tony Mowbray has revealed that Coventry's business is not done yet as he will now look to free agents to bolster his squad.

With most freebies snapped up already, Mowbray will be hoping to find some gems lying about who are willing to reduce their demands and join the Sky Blues.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Jay Williams identifies THREE free agents that Tony Mowbray should consider signing to strengthen his squad ahead of this season...

Chris Burke

burke

Scotland international Chris Burke is a free agent after his contract expired with Nottingham Forest this summer.

He most recently played for Rotherham United on loan, scoring twice in five matches for the Millers.

The 32-year-old winger has vast experience, having played over 100 senior games each for Rangers, Cardiff City and Birmingham City before his move to Nottingham Forest in 2014.

His former boss at Birmingham Lee Clark has been aiming to tempt him to SPL side Kilmarnock, but Burke might opt to move down to League One if the right offer comes in.

He would provide the experience and quality that Coventry are crying out for.

Dean Cox

Another wide man to consider is Dean Cox.

"Coxy" had served Leyton Orient for six years, becoming a fans' favourite and regularly turning in impressive performances from the wing.

Orient fans were left fuming at the owners after the former Brighton & Hove Albion man was released the day after deadline day.

The diminutive 5 ft 4'' winger has loads of experience at League One level, and would be an asset to any side.

Northampton Town have been linked with a move for the 29-year-old, but Coventry should try to woo him to the Ricoh Arena instead.

Cox embodies passion, loyalty, commitment, and just a pure love for the game of football.

Bobby Zamora

Experienced striker Zamora is a free agent and is the exact mould of striker that Coventry are desperate for.

The Sky Blues strikers are predominantly young, quick, inexperienced and raw, with Marcus Tudgay providing the only alternative.

35-year-old Zamora is a strong target man with an eye for goal, and has plenty of experience from his time with Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Fulham and QPR.

His sparkling career has spanned seventeen years with over 500 senior games, as well as two international appearances for England.

Perhaps there could be one last hurrah in the career of the left-footed forward, who was previously linked with AFC Wimbledon, and he'd undoubtedly be a better 'older' option than the likes of Stephen Hunt, Peter Ramage and Darius Henderson last season.
