With the League Cup third round fixtures taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday, Football League World has picked out three teams from the Football League who could surprise us all.

There always seems to be a cup upset in the Capital One Cup every season, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see another shock this season!

There are some mouthwatering ties in the third round, with Aston Villa taking on arch rivals Birmingham City on Tuesday evening, in what will no doubt be a fiery affair in the Midlands.

Steve Clarke's Reading face a tricky encounter against Everton at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night, and it may be an opportunity for a cup upset.

1. Middlesbrough

Aitor Karanka's side find themselves second in the Championship, and head into Tuesday's third round tie on the back of four straight league wins.

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka will be hoping to defeat Wolves

Boro host fellow Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Riverside, and former Real Madrid defender and assistant manager, Karanka, will be hoping his side can progress against a Wolves side who haven't won on the road since the opening day of the season.

Middlesbrough won the League Cup in 2004, having being runners up in back-to-back seasons in 1996/97 and 1997/98.

Karanka's side pulled off a shock in the FA Cup last season, beating Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, and should they progress on Tuesday, whoever they face in the fourth round of the League Cup should not worry Boro's more than capable squad too much.

2. Hull City

The Tigers played in their first ever cup final in 2014, defeated 3-2 by Arsenal in extra time, the East Yorkshire club showed the fighting spirit you need to progress in cup competitions.

Bruce is keen to add a new goalkeeper to his side

The third round draw for the League Cup has not been the kindest to Hull City, pairing them at home to Premier League side Swansea City.

Hull City have won four of their five home games this campaign in all competitions, including a draw at home to fellow promotion hopefuls Queens Park Rangers last Saturday.

Steve Bruce will be hoping his sides home form can help his side provide one of the first upsets of this seasons competition, and that the Tigers can draw on the experience from their 2013/14 cup run to progress further in the League Cup.

3. Reading

Reading are another Championship side who face a tough test in the third round, the Royal's face Everton at home on Tuesday, and Steve Clarke will be hoping his side can improve their home form in what will be a stern test.

Clarke's side face a tricky match with Everton

Reading have won just one of their four home games this campaign, but find themselves 6th in the Championship table.

Their only home victory was a 5-1 thumping of Ipswich Town, but was closely followed by a 1-0 home defeat to Derby County.

Reading's last two draws in the League Cup have seen them face Colchester United and Portsmouth away, and Steve Clarke will be hoping last Saturday's 2-0 win away at Bristol City will give his side the boost they need going into Tuesday's game.
