Most if not all of the Southend United faithful will agree that this campaign has been a season to forget so far for the Essex club.

The League One outfit have been in woeful form so far this term, picking up a measly seven points from their opening 21 games, thus leaving them cut adrift in the bottom three.

Their poor showings have inevitably led to changes at the top, with Kevin Bond stepping aside from his role before Sol Campbell was appointed as his successor at Roots Hall after a search for a new manager took the best part of a month and a half to appoint a new man.

The former Macclesfield Town boss certainly has a job on his hands to keep the Shrimpers in the third division, with the threat of relegation being a strong possibility, particularly with there being a 10 point gap between the Roots Hall club and MK Dons in 21st.

Here, we take a look at THREE costly errors that Southend have made throughout the year of 2019....

Slow to appoint Bond's successor

After what seemed like an age, the Shrimpers finally confirmed the appointment as Sol Campbell as their new boss, however one of the main errors that was made by the club was how long it took to bring a new man in.

The constant speculation surrounding the likes of  Henrik Larsson being linked with the role and subsequently Campbell will have no doubt grated on a squad of players who's confidence was already at an all time low following their poor start to the campaign.

Failed to replace the likes of Ben Coker

Southend's business in the summer transfer window has to be greatly questioned and dissected, with the club failing to make a concerted effort to replace the experience that was lost in the departures of the likes of Ben Coker and Michael Turner.

The club have brought in a host of inexperienced players that have so far failed to adapt to the everyday grind of being in League One and that has been most telling on the pitch, with one goal usually being enough to make their collective heads go down.

Shouldn't have appointed Bond

It is fair to say that the club made a mistake by hiring Kevin Bond in the first place, with the experienced head having been out of the game for so long prior to his appointment, it made for a recipe for disaster.

Southend fans will be hopeful that their prospects will now be improved under the stewardship of the more modern, fresher ideas of Campbell, who will no doubt look to bring in several players during the January transfer window, which is sure to be the club's best chance of staying up this term.
