Sheffield United need some defenders, and they need them quickly.

Last season they were simply not good enough at the back. Terry Kennedy found himself out on loan amid a series a of injuries, Neil Collins was sold, Chris Basham did ok when called upon, while the on loan David Edgar was neither brilliant or poor.

Later in the season Alex Baptiste joined, and he looked like an actual defender of quality, despite being out for a year with a serious injury.

Jay Mceveley has also been released by new manager Chris Wilder, along with Bob Harris, and this leaves United remarkably short of defensive cover.

Chris Hussey has joined to fill the void at left back, but United and Wilder need to act sharpish to bring in some central defenders to the club.

Here, in the opinion of FLW writer Lee Connor, are THREE defensive rocks Sheffield United could look to sign...

Dan Burn

Long linked with a move to Sheffield United throughout the last two seasons now, Burn has been released from his contract at Fulham and will be on the lookout for a move.

Surely now the time is right for the Blades to make their move and secure one of their long term targets?

Wilder has made a key point however of ensuring players only join if they fit into his philosophies, as well as the clubs wage structure. Time will tell if Wilder pursues the interest in Burn the club has shown so far.

Aaron Pierre

Another name who has been strongly linked with a move away from his current club is Aaron Pierre.

The big defender was an excellent acquisition for Wycombe a few seasons ago and has gone from strength to strength this making his move from Brentford.

At 23 he has time to develop, but he already looks an excellent presence at the heart of the defence and will be someone Wilder is aware of, given his knowledge of League Two football.

Gordon Greer

Greer has made over 150 league appearances for Brighton.

The experience centre half is out of contract with Brighton and will no doubt be looking to continue his illustrious career.

He played in the playoffs for the Seagulls, so it comes as a surprise to see that he is being allowed to leave Chris Hughton's men.

Now 35, he could be exactly what Sheffield United need at the back. A leader who can inspire those around him, he has enough experience and ability to really contribute at the back and help the young lads at United who are making their way in the game.
