Swansea City are leading the race to sign Liverpool's Rhian Brewster on loan as a result of Steve Cooper's relationship with the 19-year-old forward, according to the Telegraph.

Cooper worked with Brewster during the England Under-17s' World Cup success back in 2017, and the Swansea head coach is now thought to be keen on bringing the attacker to the Liberty Stadium during the second half of the campaign.

It is being reported that a number of Championship clubs are monitoring Brewster's situation - including the likes of Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday - but the fact Cooper has previously managed the teenager could work in Swansea's favour.

The Swansea boss saw his side collect their first win since early November as they beat Middlesbrough over the weekend, and Cooper now appears determined to boost the Swans' attacking line following a mixed first half of the season.

Here are three consequences if Swansea seal their swoop for the striker...

It would represent Swansea's ambition for the second half of the season

Swansea would have been widely viewed as Championship promotion contenders this term following their electric start to the season, but their performances have dropped off considerably since then to leave the Welsh side sitting 10th in the table.

It is yet to become clear what Swansea's aspirations are for the second half of the campaign, but the loan addition of Brewster would be a clear indication that Cooper is eyeing a promotion push in the new year.

There will certainly be plenty of interest in Brewster when the January transfer window opens, and this means it would be a major coup for Swansea if they can get the deal done.

There would be even further competition for places among Swansea's attacking unit

Cooper has been rotating Swansea's striker options so far this term in a bid to find his best attacking combination, and the arrival of Brewster would further intensify competition among the likes of Borja Baston and Sam Surridge.

Liverpool would be expecting Brewster to play regular first-team football if he joins the Swans and, while the 19-year-old may well end up being the best striker at the club, the Swans boss must ensure he is sharing the game time to keep Borja and Surridge happy.

Cooper may even attempt to use Brewster as a winger in order to keep a spot for either Borja or Surridge in the side, but there are already plenty of wide men vying for a starting place in the side, with this including the likes of Wayne Routledge, Nathan Dyer and Aldo Kalulu.

It could lead to Swansea losing the services of one of their existing frontmen

There is a chance Cooper could look to deploy Brewster out wide, but it is the most likely outcome that the Liverpool talent will lead Swansea's line, and this could lead to either Borja or Surridge leaving the club.

Borja was a regular in the side at the start of the campaign, so he cannot be happy with the fact he has been left on the bench in recent weeks, while Bournemouth will not be happy with their loan player Surridge playing second fiddle to Brewster.

The Cherries could be tempted to recall Surridge in January anyway given their striker shortage at present, while Swansea could look to offload Borja next month seeing as his contract expires next summer.
