This January looks set to play host to the most important and most exciting transfer window in a long time in the Football League with races for promotion and survival still tightly contested in every league.
For West Brom, however, it has taken a bad turn with Leicester now recalling star winger Harvey Barnes from his loan spell with the club.
Barnes moved to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan back in the summer but after a thoroughly impressive opening half of the campaign, has been called back to the Foxes.
He scored nine goals and assisted seven more during his 26 games with Darren Moore’s side, becoming a crucial member of a lethal attacking trio alongside Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez.
It now leaves Baggies’ manager Moore with a massive hole in his frontline that he will be keen to fill in as quickly as possible in the remainder of the January transfer window.
Here, though, are THREE consequences the news will have on the club…
A change in transfer policy
Going into this window, attacking changes would not have been at the forefront of Darren Moore’s mind.
He will have been much preoccupied with fixing an underperforming defence which was performing well below the sum of its individual parts.
Now, however, a replacement for Barnes becomes a matter of urgency which could lead to defensive problems remaining unsolved.
Phillips holds the power
With Barnes at the club, Matt Phillips was bumped down to second in command when it came to influential wingers.
But now, he looks like he could become very important. However, with Premier League interest in the winger he now holds the power.
The Baggies now cannot afford to lose him and he could use this position to get himself a better deal.
Out of contention
At least temporarily anyway.
Losing someone as important to the side as Barnes is inevitably going to have an affect on the club’s form so expect to see them fall behind in the race for the top two or for the gap on the chasing pack to narrow at least.
It is important a replacement is found but he must be right, otherwise, it could jeopardise the entire season.
