Huddersfield Town have defied expectations this season and maintained an automatic promotion push throughout the year.

Written off by many before the season started as relegation candidates, David Wagner's side have exceeded all hopes for Huddersfield and they currently sit third as we approach the end of season run-in.

At this stage of the season, Huddersfield Town are six points behind Brighton and seven points behind Newcastle as they try to catch the top two and win automatic promotion.

The Terriers do, however, have a vital game in hand against a rejuvenated Wolves side.

If they can pick up three points in that game, then the gap is just a mere three and four points respectively behind 2nd and 1st.

If Huddersfield do go up, either automatically or via the play-offs, they will have to strengthen their squad to survive in the top flight.

Here are 3 players they could look to poach from the Championship and take with them to the Premier League.

Alex Smithies

Huddersfield's top choice goalkeeper Danny Ward is only on loan from Liverpool so they will need to sign another stopper in the summer if they go up.

If the Terriers can't get Ward back, then perhaps they should look to bring Alex Smithies back to the club.

The 27-year-old is in the form of his life for QPR but the Huddersfield born goalkeeper who supported Huddersfield as a boy might be tempted by the opportunity of returning to his former club (where he made over 250 senior appearances) in the top flight.

Tom Cairney

Two of Huddersfield's most creative midfield players - Aaron Mooy and Kasey Palmer - are both on loan.

They need to replace that creativity in the middle of the park and they should look no further than Fulham's star Tom Cairney.

The Scotland international contributes with goals and assists, as well as creating chances and consistently churning out quality performances.

Tammy Abraham

If Huddersfield do go up, then they will need to sign a goal scorer to keep them in the division.

Colin Quaner and Nahki Wells are decent enough strikers but they aren't going to keep the Terriers up with bags of goals.

One man who might do that is Tammy Abraham, who has scored 22 goals in 40 appearances for Bristol City on loan from Chelsea this season.

The towering 19-year-old centre forward might fancy another loan move - this time to a Premier League side - to aid his development before he breaks into the Chelsea first team.
