After England's bitterly disappointing European Championship campaign during the summer in France, many have been calling for new Three Lions manager Sam Allardyce to be ruthless in who he calls up.

The Sky Bet Championship has several players who, despite playing in the second-tier, deserve the chance to play for the national team.

Even Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has called for Allardyce to choose Championship players for October's World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.

Some players from this division who have been called up to the England squad in the past includes Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton last season, before they got promoted to the top-flight and striker David Nugent, who was surprisingly called up by Steve McClaren in 2007 when playing for Preston North End.

Here are my 3 Championship players who deserve to be called up to the senior England squad by Sam Allardyce.

Jonjo Shelvey

Benitez has suggested that Jonjo Shelvey is definitely a player who deserves a recall to the England squad.

The 24-year-old midfielder moved to Newcastle United in January from Premier League outfit Swansea City in the Magpies' attempt to avoid relegation, which of course was unsuccessful.

Rafa Benitez's side have had a strong start to the season, including Shelvey who scored twice in the 6-0 victory at Loftus Road midweek against Queens Park Rangers.

He's played a part in each of Newcastle's opening eight games so far in the 2016/17 campaign, and has proved to be an essential part of the Magpies' plans this year.

He already has six caps for the England national team, and was only dropped because of a loss of form - but it seems like the midfielder has rediscovered the performances which earned him a place in the Three Lions' squad in the first place.

Will Hughes

After making his debut in the 2011-12 season for derby County, Will Hughes was tipped for a very promising career with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United once scouting the youngster.

The 21-year-old has made over 150 appearances for The Rams, but injured his anterior cruciate ligaments in the right knee after the opening game of last campaign and that has set him back.

Hughes has been described as a 'flair' player and that is something the England team definitely need at this moment in the midfield.

He has 17 caps and 2 goals to his name for the England Under-21 side, and I am sure it wouldn't hurt to promote Will Hughes to the senior squad.

The Weybridge-born man has played 9 games so far this season for Derby County, and although Nigel Pearson's squad have started disappointingly, Hughes could prove to be vital if they chase promotion.

Steven Caulker

It is no secret that Sam Allardyce is short of centre-back choices, with just three being named in the 23-man squad for the Slovakia game earlier this month.

One man who can say he deserves a call-up is Queens Park Rangers defender Steven Caulker. After spending much of his early career in the defence of Tottenham Hotspur, along with a short loan-spell at Southampton last season, the 24-year-old can't say he has no experience against some of the world's best.

Even if it was just as back-up, Allardyce and his backroom staff should consider, at the very least, bringing Caulker into the national team. Not just as it's short of defensive cover but he could and probably would challenge any of the current centre-backs in the England side.

QPR's start to the campaign has been fairly average, but Caulker will be determined to drive his side up the table to challenge for promotion.
