Newcastle United's form in the Premier League suggests they could find themselves in the Championship next season, if they don't bring in suitable reinforcements in the current transfer window.

With Steve McClaren at the helm, the Magpies have a manager with knowledge of the Championship, with the former England boss having left Derby County in the summer to take up the job at St James's Park.

Having not won in their last five league outings, Newcastle sit 19th in the table, just a point from safety, having only avoided the drop on the final day of the season last year.

McClaren has previous when it comes to getting a team away from the bottom three late in the campaign, having led Middlesbrough to a strong finish in the 2005-06 season, earning himself the England job in the process.

Newcastle have already been busy in this transfer window, with Jonjo Shelvey joining rom Swansea City and Bordeaux's Henri Saivet also making the switch,.

Jeff Hendrick

Republic of Ireland international Jeff Hendrick was one of Derby County's top scorers under McClaren last season, but he hasn't had the same impact in Paul Clement's system, netting just once in 28 appearances.

The 23-year-old was left out for the FA Cup match against Hartlepool United, which could indicate the club is willing to sell, ensuring that he isn't cup-tied, although that wouldn't be an issue for the already-eliminated Magpies.

With his national side qualifying for Euro 2016, Hendrick will be keen to impress in the second half of the season, ensuring that he remains in Martin O'Neill's squad for the tournament in France.

Hendrick can play as a defensive midfielder, as well as pressing forward, and is able to create chances for his teammates, which is something Newcastle have lacked at times this season.

Tjaronn Chery

The Queens Park Rangers midfielder will certainly be familiar to McClaren, having made the first senior appearance of his career at FC Twente during the Newcastle boss's stint at the Dutch club.

Since joining QPR in the summer, the 27-year-old has performed well in the Championship, scoring four goals in 24 appearances.

Chery isn't just a goal threat - he has three assists to his name this season, and is an accurate passer of the ball, as well as a threat from free kicks and long range.

QPR paid just £2.25m for the Dutch international in the summer, so could expect to make a healthy profit on the player if he moves to a Premier League side, who would surely be willing to pay to get themselves away from the relegation zone.

Alan Judge

The Championship's top-scoring midfielder is known for his energetic style of play and hard work, which is the kind of commitment Newcastle will need from their players if they are to stay in the top flight.

The Magpies will face competition is they do go in for the Brentford midfielder, with Burnley having already made a bid for the 27-year-old.

With 10 goals for the Bees this season, Judge is more than capable in front of goal, but he also has seven assists to his name, which is the joint-highest in the Championship.

Like Hendrick, Judge has an interest in impressing Martin O'Neill in the second half of the season, having been an unused substitute in the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2016 playoff, and continuing his current form in the Premier League would likely see him considered for the squad.
