3 Championship defenders Newcastle United should consider signing this month

Newcastle United haven’t had a good season thus far and lie in the relegation zone of the Premier League.

A number of problems have lead to the club’s sharp decline, with owner Mike Ashley constantly coming under fire from unhappy fans.

With such a large following and a reputable history, Newcastle should be a team challenging for European places in the top-flight. However that is evidently far from the case.

They have conceded the second most goals this season in the Premier League second only to Tyneside rivals Sunderland with 41 compared to the latters 45.

Club captain Fabricio Coloccini is a favourite amongst the Newcastle faithful after his performances in recent seasons have been excellent, notably back in 2012 when he was named in the PFA Team of the Year.

However, the Argentinian is ageing and while he can still play his heart out for the team, he can often make costly mistakes.

Alongside the 33-year-old is Congolese international Chancel Mbemba. The former Anderlecht player has not been poor for the Magpies with 22 appearances this season, but it cannot be ignored that the club have conceded a lot of goals.

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has plenty of knowledge on the Championship having managed Derby County prior to his move up north.

With this transfer window of great importance to Newcastle, it would not go amiss for McClaren to look to his old league for defensive talent.

Here are THREE Championship defenders Newcastle could potentially sign this January……
