Manchester United last won the Premier League in 2013, since then, they have failed to be in the top four once and scraped into a Champions League place last season.

This season is not going much better than the previous two under Dutch Boss Louis van Gaal, as they currently sit fifth in the Premier League table two point outside the top four.

The fans however are not happy at the Theatre of Dreams with the style of play, nor does the good league position satisfy the Old Trafford faithful.

The position in the league is masking over numerous problems at the Manchester giants, defensively they are not sound, which makes them play in a more compact fashion which in turn produces dull football - until they sort out the defence they cannot attack like they did of old.

The Championship possesses numerous defenders who could grow and develop into the top level kind of defender that Manchester United need.

We here at Football League World have draw up a list of THREE defenders we think Man Utd should consider signing this month from the Championship.....

Michael Keane

The 23-year-old centre back has been outstanding for Burnley so far this season, playing in 28 games and scoring three goals.

He is quick, calm on the ball and very good in the air, Keane was a former trainee at Old Trafford so he wouldn't be a complete unknown to them, but he has grown and improved a vast amount since leaving Old Trafford.

There is no reason the Clarets defender cannot go full circle and return to Manchester United.

James Tarkowski

Burnley target Tarkowski is an excellent defender, in fact one of the best in the Championship, and is being tracked by several clubs from both the Premier League and the Championship.

He is 6ft 1in, two footed and excellent in the air, Brentford do not wish to sell this player, and despite his refusal to play in the game against Burnley, is usually level headed and a leader on the pitch.

An outstanding player could make the step up in class without a problem, one of the brightest talents in the Championship.

Marnick Vermijl

Preston North End (on-loan from Sheffield Wednesday) right-back Marnick Vermijl gets forward and provides an attacking threat from the right hand side, he has scored one goal so far this year.

Marnick is quick, gets up and down the flank with ease, provides the width in the Preston team, and puts in dangerous crosses which his team mates have failed to capitalise on.

Manchester United lack a decent supporting right back and this could be their man.

Similar to Keane, Vermijl has been at United before in his career, so it wouldn't be a shock to the player.

Have your say.....Do you think these players could play at the highest level? Who do you think Manchester United should sign from the Championship? Leave your comments below!
