Ipswich Town are hoping to seal a deal for Rudy Gestede in January, as Paul Lambert looks to bring in quality to keep the Tractor Boys up.

A hard-fought victory over Wigan last time out has at least provided some hope around Portman Road heading into the New Year, although they remain five points adrift at the bottom.

Therefore, January will be crucial and the Telegraph report that Middlesbrough's Gestede is someone Lambert has identified to bring in.

The target man has struggled with injuries and form in the north east and could be allowed to leave as he seeks regular football.

However, he may take a lot of convincing to head to Suffolk given Ipswich's awful position.

So, we look at THREE Championship rivals who would be more appealing to the 30-year-old, and who could do with the qualities he has...

Whilst he may not be a name that Stoke City fans want, the reality is Gestede could be what they need.

Boss Gary Rowett likes to play with a target man and the Benin international is superb in the air and with his back to goal.

As well as that, he could bring the best out of either Benik Afobe or Sadio Berahino, who just haven't been consistent enough this season.

They would relish the chance to play alongside someone like Gestede and he could be the team player to lead the line that gives them more opportunities in front of goal.

Gestede had a great time at Blackburn a few years ago, which was easily his most productive spell in England.

Given that, he may welcome a return to Ewood Park, where the fans still think fondly of him.

Tony Mowbray's side are probably lacking a number nine and this could be the perfect addition.

Another side who are desperately short in the final third are Wigan.

Paul Cook is lacking numbers and quality up top and it has to be addressed in the January window.

The chance to bring in a proven Championship player like Gestede will certainly appeal and he would become first choice for the Latics.
