After Football Insider reported that Josh Brownhill could be heading to Burnley in a swap deal involving Nahki Wells, the transfer saga involving the two players has seemingly gone up a gear.

Brownhill has been in strong form for the Robins this term, thriving in the more withdrawn role that he has been afforded by Lee Johnson, thus yielding a healthy return of five goals and two assists.

Whilst Wells in comparison had been in stunning form for QPR prior to receiving a recall by Burnley earlier today, netting 13 goals in 26 Championship games to date.

Bristol City's desire to bring in a striker this window is well known to Burnley, however it seems likely that the Robins would look to drive a hard bargain for their captain, with the 24-year-old forming a key part of the club's promotion bid.

Only time will tell as to whether a deal will be struck between the two clubs or not, with just over four days to go in the current transfer window.

Here, we take a look at THREE Bristol City players who could benefit if Brownhill departs Ashton Gate this month....

Han-Noah Massengo

The bright and exciting Frenchman could well re-establish himself as a regular starter under Johnson over the coming months if Brownhill does indeed depart the club this month.

Massengo has fallen out of favour recently at Ashton Gate, with his manager perhaps taking steps towards giving him a rest to avoid the possibility of the teenager experiencing burnout.

Having started the campaign so well, the former AS Monaco man has recently gone off the boil and now faces a fight on his hands to break back into the starting eleven.

Brownhill's departure would in theory see Massengo slot back into his favoured role of deep-lying midfield and for that reason he could greatly benefit from seeing his teammate depart this window.

Callum O'Dowda

The former Oxford United man has been used in several roles by Johnson this term and could well go some way towards nailing down a spot in central midfield if Brownhill were to leave Ashton Gate.

O'Dowda has been regularly played in an advanced midfield role this term and would certainly thrive as part of his side's currently employed formation of 4-1-4-1.

His workrate and desire to create chances makes him the ideal candidate to fill the void that would be left by Brownhill and for that reason he could greatly benefit from seeing his teammate depart this month.

With only one goal and one assist to his name this term, O'Dowda will certainly be keen to increase his output over the next few months as he seeks to gain more opportunities internationally with the Republic of Ireland.

Adam Nagy

The Hungarian midfielder has been finding life at Ashton Gate tough since returning from injury earlier in the campaign, with the 24-year-old having largely found himself out of favour under Johnson recently.

Brownhill's departure would in theory gift Nagy the game time that he no doubt craves, with the competition for places in the Bristol City midfield being particularly high at present.

Much of Nagy's chances to start more frequently will depend on the system that Johnson chooses to deploy, with the Robins boss having used a wide variety of systems to get the best out of his side.

Nagy's re-appearance in the starting eleven would in theory see Korey Smith drop out, meaning that the Hungarian can slot into his preferred role of defensive midfield.
