There is no getting away from how disappointing the 2017/18 campaign has been for Sheffield Wednesday, who have failed to produce the promotion push many in the Sky Bet Championship expected.

Jos Luhukay is now the man in-charge at Hillsborough, with the Dutchman overseeing the second-half of the season and guiding the Owls away from a potential relegation scrap.

Injuries have been the reason behind Wednesday’s downfall this season, with the likes of Barry Bannan, Fernando Forestieri and Tom Lees missing large parts of the season, depriving the Owls of the spine of the side that has guided them to back-to-back play-off campaigns.

Results are slowly improving, which has coincided with the return of that trio, and Luhukay will want to see more improvement between now and the end of the season ahead of a huge summer.

With a big summer rapidly approaching, we take a look at THREE decisions that could define Sheffield Wednesday’s 2018/19 campaign…

Loovens has been Wednesday’s captain during their recent success in the Championship, but at 34, the Dutchman is coming towards the end of his career.

Next season, Loovens’ opportunities might be limited, despite a switch to a three-man defence.

Luhukay might look to move Loovens on.

As mentioned, Loovens has captained Wednesday in recent years, but Luhukay will want his captain to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Tom Lees has deputised on occasions, whilst Sam Hutchinson could be another contender to wear the armband, although his history of injuries could work against him.

Luhukay needs to make sure his captaincy appointment is right.

Nuhiu could be on his way out of Hillsborough in the summer, but has been superb under Luhukay so far.

The striker has scored goals and led the line superbly in the absence of Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper, with plenty of calls for Nuhiu to be rewarded.

Luhukay needs to decide whether those efforts should be rewarded or this should be Nuhiu’s parting gift to the Owls.
