Although Huddersfield Town have had a rollercoaster of a season with a number of both low and high points, they could be set for their highest position since their return to the Sky Bet Championship.

As the Championship is a marathon, it would be naive to suffer from short-termism, with a winless run or a string of victories causing both hope and despair when in fact, it was just a small part of a much larger picture.

Huddersfield have not had the most memorable of seasons thus far, but they still have had some moments for their fans to enjoy and the club to enjoy more.

I have chosen three different types of moments - a goal and subsequently a recognition that a young academy player has broken through, a result, and an event that has sent shockwaves through the club and fan base.

No matter what happens this season, there is a lot of optimism swirling around the John Smith's Stadium that next season, Huddersfield can be the surprise package and be talked about in a different light to recent seasons, where they have been seen as treading water over the relegation places.

Leeds United 1-4 Huddersfield Town

wellsssss

This is the most recent event that Huddersfield have been involved in - the second half performance showed what Huddersfield can do and what could be to come.

Although Leeds United and their fans particularly are quick to dismiss that this game means very little to them, the defeat and how Leeds were beaten will have been painful, as they were comprehensively beaten despite taking the lead.

Leeds have been a bogey side of Huddersfield over recent years, and this victory shows that this Huddersfield side has a different mentality to ones in years gone by.

It was also important for Huddersfield in a much broader context.

A defeat could have seen them in touching distance of the bottom three and, although performances suggest that Huddersfield are in a false position, a defeat could have seen them sucked into a relegation battle.

This victory may have been the win that has seen them safe this season, and the focus can now turn to next season and mount a challenge that is more than just relative safety and consolidation.

Philip Billing and his goal v Nottingham Forest

Philip Billing

The second moment is the start of a much broader moment, with the breakthrough of the talented Danish midfielder Philip Billing.

When Jacob Butterfield and Conor Coady left the club in the summer, there were real concerns that the midfield that was Huddersfield's strongest position last season could become the weakest, yet Billing has stepped up and showed his worth.

This moment was best expressed with his goal which could easily be Huddersfield's goal of the season, away from home at Nottingham Forest.

In a tense and nervy affair that Huddersfield dominated start to finish with Billing running the show in midfield, he deservedly got his goal as he picked up the ball 35 yards out and fired it into the top corner, leaving Dorus De Vries stranded, and compounding the misery on Nottingham Forest.

The goal showed how talented Billing is and, although he has had a stop-start season due to injury and suspension, Huddersfield fans will be pleased to see him break through, and will be excited to see him playing even more for this season.

The appointment of David Wagner

The final moment was the appointment of David Wagner to replace Chris Powell as the head coach of Huddersfield Town.

It was an extremely risky move to go against the grain and take a completely different direction, but it has paid off as Huddersfield have been a revitalised force in the second half of the season.

No team has scored more goals in the period of time that Wagner has been head coach than Huddersfield, and he has shown what can be done with an entertaining and attractive style of football.

Although at the time this moment was a questionable one, it has paid off, and this moment could make next season particularly memorable for Huddersfield if Wagner is backed financially.

Wagner's infectious personality and belief have instilled confidence and optimism in the fans, and there is a sense that Dean Hoyle has uncovered a gem who could really take Huddersfield places if the right decisions are made and he is given the environment to thrive in.
