Reading booked their spot in the third round of the EFL Cup with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Tuesday evening.

There was a long-awaited return to the starting XI for Jordan Obita as well, with the left-back captaining the Royals on the night on his return from a lengthy spell in the treatment room.

In today's FLW Spotlight, we look into Obita's statistics from his last full season in 2016/17 in more detail, and see whether he'll be a key player for Jose Gomes' side this term.

In the last season that Obita took part in, it was a hugely impressive league campaign, where the Berkshire-based side finished inside the top-six.

They then saw off Fulham in their play-off semi-final, although Obita missed his penalty in their play-off final at Wembley, which ended in defeat against Huddersfield Town.

He then picked up a serious knee injury which has ruled him out for the last two seasons, which will have been a frustrating time for the left-back in the treatment room.

Obita is a player that can be a threat at both ends of the pitch, as he was previously a left-winger, and his attacking instincts are clear to see in these statistics.

In the 2016/17 season, Obita attempted 60 dribbles, and with three assists, he's a full-back that is an excellent option to have going forward for the Royals.

The 25-year-old won 293 aerial duels as well, in a season that Reading emerged as surprise promotion contenders under Jaap Stam's guidance.

But one statistic that will make for encouraging reading for the Madejski Stadium faithful and current manager Jose Gomes, will be his pass accuracy.

Obita attempted 1405 passes in total during the 2016/17 season, and with a pass accuracy of 83.8%, it certainly is a real strength that the defender currently has.

Jose Gomes has implemented a possession-based style of play, which requires his squad to be comfortable on the ball throughout the course of a game.

It's been successful this season as well, with the Royals currently sat 11th in the Championship table, and just two points adrift of a play-off spot in the early stages of this year's league campaign.

So, Obita has already shown that he's more than capable of playing his part for Gomes' side this season, and he'll be hoping that his injury troubles are behind him now.

It will be interesting to see whether Obita is involved in the matchday squad for Reading's game against Charlton Athletic this weekend, where the Royals will be looking to make it five games unbeaten in all competitions.
