Since opting to replace Garry Monk with Pep Clotet in June, Birmingham City have made a relatively positive start to the 2019/20 campaign under the guidance of the caretaker head coach.

As well as producing promising displays away from home against the likes of Brentford and Charlton Athletic, the Blues have also been impressive at St Andrew's so far this year.

Currently 11th in the Championship standings, Birmingham will be determined to launch a sustained push for a top-six finish.

However, in order to achieve this goal, it could be argued that Clotet needs to bolster his squad during the upcoming transfer window.

Keeping this in mind, here are three areas that we think Birmingham must improve upon in January...

Adding some much-needed competition for Lee Camp

Whilst it it would be naive to suggest that Lee Camp has been poor between the sticks this season for Birmingham, it could be argued that he may benefit from some much-needed competition at St Andrew's.

Therefore, the Blues should look into the possibility of signing a younger goalkeeper who may potentially thrive in the Championship if given the chance to by Clotet.

Camp, who at the age of 35 is very much in the twilight of his career, could pass on his wealth of experience at this level to whoever Birmingham opt to swoop for in January.

Boosting their options in the heart of defence

When you consider that Birmingham have conceded 19 goals in all competitions this year, they may need to bolster their options in the heart of defence during the upcoming transfer window.

Although Harlee Dean and Marc Roberts have both impressed at times for the Blues, the jury is still out on whether back-up centre-back Jake Clarke-Salter is good enough to play at Championship level.

Therefore, by signing a defender who knows exactly what it takes to deliver the goods in the second-tier, Birmingham could take their game to new heights in 2020.

Signing a pacy striker

Since Che Adams' departure in the summer, Birmingham have had to rely on Lukas Jutkiewicz and Alvaro Gimenez to lead the line at St Andrew's.

Whilst the former of the two strikers has an excellent track-record in the Championship, Gimenez has struggled to adapt to life in England following his move from Almeria.

If the Blues are serious about challenging for the play-offs this season, they should consider making a move for a pacy forward in January who is capable of taking the game to the opposition.
