Garry Monk has had a fantastic start as Sheffield Wednesday boss and will surely have his eyes set on play-off qualification come the end of the season.

The 40-year-old took over at Hillsborough at the start of September and has picked up 10 points from a possible 15, since which has meant the Owls have climbed to eighth in the Championship–just one point outside the top six.

On top of that, Monk was nominated for Championship manager of the month for September, while Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher were also on the shortlist for the PFA Fans' Player of the Month.

He will likely head into the international break very happy with his first four or five weeks in charge but there are certainly things that Wednesday boss will know his side can work on in the extended break before their next game–a trip to face Cardiff City.

With that in mind, we have highlighted three areas of improvement that Monk will have identified in his squad.

The depth up front.

Steven Fletcher has been fantastic this season and was a deserved nominee for Player of the Month. The 32-year-old has rolled back the years and contributed five goals and one assist in 10 Championship appearances.

Outside of the Scotsman, however, his other options have underwhelmed this season. Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu, and Jordan Rhodes have got just two league goals between them and the toothless performance against Wigan Athletic when Fletcher was injured showed that they have a lack of depth up top.

The performances of the full-backs.

Wednesday's central defenders have been fantastic this season. Free-agent signing Julian Borner has been a revelation at the heart of their backline, while Tom Lees continued to show his solidity and consistency before picking up an injury and Dominic Iorfa has been really impressive in his place.

The full-backs, however, have left a bit to be desired and are at this point what is stopping the Owls from having a really solid defensive unit.

Liam Palmer has been consistently underwhelming and on the right, Moses Odubajo has looked the weak link–with Lees returning soon, it could be a smart move to shift Iorfa over to right-back in his place.

Jacob Murphy's form.

The winger signed on loan from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day and put in an exciting performance against Barnsley on his debut, scoring the opener in the second minute.

That performance made it seem like Wednesday would be almost impossible to stop, with Murphy on one flank and Kadeem Harris on the other, but the latter has made little impact since–failing to register a goal or an assist.

You would imagine if Wednesday are going to mount a serious play-off challenge, they will need the 24-year-old to rediscover his form.
