Brighton are closing in on a club-record deal for Bristol City's Adam Webster, report BBC Sport.

The defender could make the switch to the south coast for £20m, and although he would be a big loss to The Robins, there is a lot they would be able to do with that money.

Bristol City have operated shrewdly in the market so far with Tomas Kalas and Jay DaSilva the pick of the arrivals, but they have still been able to record a profit thanks to the sales of Mo Eisa and Lloyd Kelly.

Webster was arguably The Robins' best player last season and he was a big presence in their defence. He helped the team keep 11 clean sheets but in his 43 appearances they conceded 49 goals, so he isn't exactly irreplaceable.

For £20m or more it would certainly be a good deal financially for the club, and they would be able to add quality Championship players to the areas most in need of strengthening, as well as some young players too.

Here are three things The Robins must do with the money they gain from the sale of Webster.

Sign a centre-back

This may not be as obvious as it seems, as the club already has two very strong centre-back options in Tomas Kalas and Bailey Wright, who will be raring to go after making a comeback from injury towards the end of last season.

One name that would be a great addition to the squad is Michael Hector. He has proved his quality in spells at Reading, Hull and most recently at Sheffield Wednesday last season, and the fact The Owls wanted to sign him permanently underlines the quality he has.

He is also attracting interest from Fulham, and could be available for as little as £3m, which would be a tiny drop out of the Webster budget and allow the club to strengthen other areas.

Failing that, there are other accomplished defenders who could be available. Krystian Bielik and Matt Clarke could both be available on loan and both are capable of fitting into Lee Johnson's style of play and filling Webster's shoes.

Bring in a goalscorer

Much of Bristol City's success in the Championship previously has been due to players like Tammy Abraham and Bobby Reid scoring goals on a regular basis.

Last season they had all the pieces in place to mount a play-off challenge but lacked a prolific goalscorer to get them over the line. Famara Diedhiou did a good job last season but he could do with a poacher playing alongside him, as he is better at creating chances than putting them away.

Scott Hogan has been linked previously, and if Johnson can play in a way which suits him and allows him to rediscover his best form then The Robins would have quite a player on their hands.

There are several options available in the EFL and abroad, and money shouldn't be an issue. Considering it is the most important position on the pitch the club should not hold back when it comes to spending.

Add a game-changer, a player with a bit of spark

The best option would be to bring in a right-winger as City's current options there - Marley Watkins and Andreas Weimann - are rather uninspiring and weak links in comparison to other areas of the squad.

Bristol City are strong in a number of areas and the arrival of Sammie Szmodics will add creativity which they lacked at times last season. However, in tight games where a moment of magic is needed Bristol City lack a player to produce a match-winning moment - a player like Jack Grealish or Mason Mount were for their teams last season.

A player with flair and an ability to take on defenders would be a constant menace for the opposition to deal with and would, in turn, open up space for other creative players to take advantage of.
