It’s been an incredibly slow start to the summer for Sheffield Wednesday, with Jos Luhukay’s squad in need of a reshape ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Last season the Owls struggled to a mid-table finish, competing way below where many were expecting in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Hillsborough faithful are expecting to see Luhukay shake things up during his first summer with the club, but so far, it’s been frustrating transfer news for the Owls.

This week, their pursuit of Frederico Venancio has hit a bump in the road, with the Sheffield Star reporting that they could be in danger of missing out on the centre-back, who impressed whilst on-loan in South Yorkshire last season.

Here at FLW, we take that transfer update into account, identifying THREE alternatives that Luhukay and Sheffield Wednesday could turn to this summer to solve their defensive crisis…

Batth helped Wolves to promotion in the Championship last season, but it remains to be seen if he has a role to play in the Premier League.

If there’s any possibility that the centre-back is available, Championship clubs would be on alert.

If that’s the case, Wednesday should take a look.

The 20-year-old spent time on-loan with Sheffield United and Ipswich Town last season, with another loan expected for the Tottenham centre-back.

Hillsborough could be a good place for Carter-Vickers to continue his development next season.

He should be a defender Luhukay considers if he misses out on Venancio.

Hefele hasn’t featured much for Huddersfield Town in the Premier League, despite an influential role in helping the Terriers there.

The centre-back showed real quality in the Championship before, and could be available at a low price this summer.

He could be ideal for the Owls.
