Sheffield Wednesday are searching for a new manager as Steve Bruce closes in on the Newcastle job.

It has been widely reported that the 58-year-old has quit as the Owls boss and it has left the Yorkshire outfit in a very tricky position considering the Championship season starts in under three weeks.

And, the bad news doesn't end there for Wednesday, with the Mirror reporting that Chris Hughton has rejected the chance to take over at Hillsborough.

The former Brighton boss would appear to be the ideal candidate as he has won promotion from the Championship twice and had done a fine job with the Seagulls over the past few years until he was dismissed in May.

Therefore, his decision to turn down an opportunity to speak to Wednesday is a blow and it means they will have to extend the search elsewhere.

Here we look at THREE alternatives who should be on the Owls radar...

Garry Monk

With the new season drawing closer, Wednesday will want a swift appointment and the best way to do that is securing an out of work manager.

Monk fits into that category after leaving Birmingham and whilst his departure has been messy, he did do a fine job at St. Andrew's and it will have impressed the Owls hierarchy.

The former Leeds boss overachieved on a tight budget and will feel he could do the same in Sheffield.

Aitor Karanka

Another available manager is ex-Nottingham Forest chief Karanka.

He has an impressive CV for the second tier having won promotion with Middlesbrough which has to appeal and he makes his sides hard to beat.

The Spaniard was also unfortunate to lose his last job at Nottingham Forest and if they could convince him to Yorkshire it would be a shrewd appointment from Wednesday.

Daniel Stendel

Alternatively, the Owls could look for someone in work that they think they could attract and Barnsley's Stendel fits the bill.

Whilst the Tykes would hate to see the German leave, the chance to move to their rivals may appeal, particularly with several key players leaving Oakwell this summer.

Stendel has built an exciting side with a clear style of play despite having limited funds and may look to replicate that at Hillsborough if the opportunity comes up.
