Nottingham Forest will be hoping to challenge for promotion in Martin O'Neill's first season in charge and the Northern Irishman will likely be looking to shape the squad to fit his style over the summer.

O'Neill arrived at the County Ground in January following Aitor Karanka's surprise exit and led the Reds to a ninth-place finish at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

One move Forest are reportedly keen to make is to bring back West Ham United defender Sam Byram, who was on loan with club last season and made eight appearances for the club as a knee injury kept him sidelined for an extended period.

The Hammers are understood to be ready to move the defender but the appointment of former West Ham boss Slaven Bilic at West Bromwich Albion may be set to obstruct Forest's move for him.

Bilic signed Byram in 2015 and may be looking for a reunion with the Englishman at the Hawthorns.

With that in mind, we look at three alternatives O'Neill could look at if the new Baggies boss hijacks the move for the right-back...

Todd Kane

The Chelsea defender is out-of-contract at the end of this month and impressed at Hull City last season, making 41 appearances and helping the Tigers to a 13th-place finish.

The 25-year-old was offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge but appears keen on finding first-team football elsewhere, with Derby County among multiple other teams rumoured to be interested.

In Kane, Forest would be signing a defender who has proven he has the quality needed for the Championship.

The Englishman is available on a free transfer, which would leave O'Neill more funds to strengthen elsewhere, but the Reds may struggle to prise him away from the other interested parties.

Andy Yiadom

The 27-year-old has worked his way up through the lower leagues of English football, playing for Hayes & Yeading, Braintree, Barnet, and Barnsley before he arrived at Reading.

The Ghana international was one of the standouts in a disappointing season for the Royals and has more than 100 games worth of Championship experience.

He is also capable of filling in at left-back, having played there 41 times in his career, which would provide O'Neill with some added versatility.

Reading were languishing down near the bottom of the Championship last season and finished just seven points off the drop zone, which means Yiadom may be keen to join a potential playoff contender.

Jack Stacey

Stacey is unproven at Championship level but his performances bombing down the right-hand side for Luton Town in League One last season showed he is a dangerous player and earned him a place in the EFL League One Team of the Season.

The 23-year-old was a key player in the Hatters' League One winning campaign, making 45 appearances and playing in 98% of the club's league minutes.

The noise around Stacey has been minimal in comparison to his full-back partner James Justin, who has attracted lots of Premier League attention, but if he can recreate the form he showed last season he could be an excellent option for O'Neill.
