The Daniel James saga was a transfer saga that dominated the headlines in the January transfer window, with Leeds United heavily interested in signing the winger.

The Wales international emerged as a target for Marcelo Bielsa's men who had their eyes set on automatic promotion, and James was shaping up to be an important player in their final push for the Premier League.

After weeks of talk and discussions, and it seemed as if Leeds had finally got their man, when the youngster arrived at Elland Road for a medical - but in the 11th hour of the window, Swansea infamously pulled the plug on the deal.

Since then, Leeds' bid for automatic promotion has derailed, with Bielsa's men crying out for James' pace and flair in the side - and it looks as if the Whites may have been dealt yet another huge blow in their pursuit of the Swansea star.

Reports have emerged claiming that Premier League champions Manchester City have joined the race to sign James, with Pep Guardiola's men reportedly lining up a £7million move for the rapid wide-man.

If James did leave for City in the summer, we take a look at three alternatives Bielsa should be targeting...

Ivan Cavaleiro

Cavaleiro was linked with a move to Elland Road in January, and Bielsa should definitely reignite interest in the winger.

The 25-year old played an influential role in guiding Wolves to the Premier League last season, but has made just five league starts for the West Midlands side this term.

He could be available on the cheap in the summer.

Adama Traore

Another player who has endured a turbulent season at Molineux is Traore.

The winger has failed to make an impact under Nuno Santo since his £18million move from Middlesbrough in the summer, making just seven league starts for the club.

His end product leaves a lot to be desired, but his pace is incredibly frightening and he would be a superb addition for the Whites.

Luke Freeman

Leeds will know all about Freeman, after such an impressive season thus far.

The QPR playmaker has scored eight goals and produced four assists for the R's this term, and he put in a magnificent individual display against Bielsa's men last month at Loftus Road.

He has already been linked with a move to Elland Road and would be a perfect signing for the Whites.
