3 Aden Flint alternatives Derby County should consider after 32-year-old edges closer to Stoke City move

Suffering relegation to League One, Derby County will be striving for an immediate return to the Championship

With a lot of uncertainty regarding player situations and the drama associated with the club’s takeover, it is difficult for the Rams to plan too far ahead with next season in mind.

One player the Rams have been linked with is Cardiff City’s towering defender Aden Flint, however, a Patreon from journalist Alan Nixon states that Stoke City are set to win the race.

With that in mind, here, we take a look at three Flint alternatives that the Rams should cast eyes on…

Connor Taylor

Enjoying an excellent loan spell with Bristol Rovers last season, Connor Taylor has proven to possess an incredibly high ceiling, although the next step of his career is yet to be determined.

Should Stoke add Flint, then they will already have a strong and well-balanced backline, paving the way for Taylor to go back out on loan.

Bristol Rovers boss Joey Barton is keen to re-sign the 20-year-old ahead of their League One return, however, if Derby set their sights on him, then the lure of Pride Park could be too much to ignore.

Quiz: Are these 20 Derby County transfer facts true or false?

Phil Jagielka left the club for a transfer fee in January.

Mattie Pollock

Looking again at a more youthful potential option, Watford’s Mattie Pollock could be a player that the Rams look at this summer.

A commanding figure, who plays with maturity beyond his years, it remains to be seen if Rob Edwards will trust him in the Championship.

Spending a successful loan stint with Cheltenham Town last season, a move to Derby could be the final stage of his progression before more regular football with the Hornets.

James Chester

Perhaps in need of adding an experienced head to this list, given the uncertain nature of the immediate future of Curtis Davies, James Chester is an option that the Rams could consider.

A vastly-experienced Championship defender, the 33-year-old is just five games shy of 300 second-tier appearances and could be a real leader at Pride Park.

A combative and hard-working defender, he could be deemed as a Flint alternative, or a Davies replacement, should the latter actually occur.
