A big money move to Newcastle United from Blackburn Rovers guaranteed Grant Hanley a year at the top of the Championship, and the opportunity to play in the Premier League once again.

The Scottish international enjoyed a spell in the top flight with Blackburn Rovers, and a transfer to the North East to become the Magpies' first choice centre-back was a dream move for the former Rangers and Crewe youngster.

Things did not turn out as planned, however, and Hanley made only 10 appearances over the course of 46 league games, and a move away from Tyneside after only one year looks likely this summer.

Hanley has been linked with several Championship sides, but a move to Derby would be the best option for the player.

The Rams are looking to break into the top six following a disappointing showing last time out, and have already moved to secure solid centre-back Curtis Davies from relegated Hull City this summer.

A new look centre-half pairing could be on the cards at Pride Park, and Hanley should provide the other 50% of the defensive duo.

The Scottish international (rated at £3.83m on Transfermarkt) is an extremely capable defender who fell on hard times at Newcastle, and could really reestablish himself in Derbyshire.

Gary Rowett will be keen to bring the Scotsman into his squad ahead of preseason, and a bid for the player could materialise in the coming weeks.
