Sheffield Wednesday striker Fernando Forestieri will be needing to show his worth once again at Hillsborough, with the 29-year-old nearing a return to the first team squad following the end of a six-match suspension.

Forestieri has already proven himself a reliable performer for Sheffield Wednesday having been a key part of the side which reached the play-offs in consecutive campaigns between 2016 and 2017, but the forward has been unable to establish himself as a first team regular during the last two seasons with a mixture of bad form, injuries and suspensions hampering his progress.

The 29-year-old has only made one start in the Championship so far this season, with Steven Fletcher flourishing having been given the faith to be the club's leading striker so far, and the Scotland international already has five goals and an assist to his name so far in the league this term.

Forestieri's cause has not been helped by him being given a six-game suspension following the conclusion of an appeal against a racism allegation, which occurred following an incident with Mansfield Town's Krystian Pearce, and the striker has therefore been unable feature so far under Garry Monk.

Monk has arrived at Hillsborough with an enviable wealth of striking options to choose from, with the likes of Sam Winnall and Jordan Rhodes struggling to find consistent game time ahead of both Fletcher and Atdhe Nuhiu, and Forestieri will need to show signs he is ready to be selected ahead of those options if he is going to get some regular game time for the rest of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters will be willing for Forestieri to get back to displaying the sort of form he showed in his first two seasons at Hillsborough, where he scored 15 and 12 league goals respectively in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, and the forward will need to get back to that level to convince Monk of his worth to the side.

Forestieri needs to mark his return as an opportunity to once again prove himself at Sheffield Wednesday, and the 29-year-old has all of the attributes to offer something different to Monk's attacking options, but if his attitude is not right and he continues to get into trouble with suspensions then the new Owls boss might decide that the club should move on without the forward.

This could be a make or break period in Forestieri's career, with the 29-year-old's response to coming back into the first team picture crucial and it will decide whether he still has a chance to perform at Hillsborough, or whether Monk feels he needs to move him on and focus on his other options up front.
