Luton Town midfielder Jacob Butterfield has revealed that he is determined to secure a much-needed victory for his side over his former club Barnsley on Saturday.

The 29-year-old enjoyed a fruitful five-year spell with the Tykes before moving to Norwich City in 2012 and has since struggled in recent visits to Oakwell.

On the losing side against Barnsley whilst sporting the colours of Middlesbrough and Derby County, Butterfield will now be aiming to help Luton kick-start their 2019/20 Championship campaign in South Yorkshire.

Although the Hatters showed real signs of promise during their opening day draw against Middlesbrough at Kenilworth Road, they have since slumped to three consecutive defeats in the second-tier.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post ahead of the upcoming clash with Barnsley, Butterfield said: "I do not have a great record there [at Oakwell] and I will be aiming to put that right on Saturday.

"I remember my last game there when I got my injury.

"That was a time when I was really flying and playing great football and had a lot of Premier League clubs going to watch me as I was a young lad who was the captain of a Championship club.

"We were having a great season and that injury just stopped that in its tracks."

Whereas Luton manager Graeme Jones will be able to call upon the services of Butterfield on Saturday, he is set to be without Martin Cranie after the defender was forced off with ligament damage in Tuesday's clash with Sheffield Wednesday (via Luton Today).

The Verdict

Although Butterfield has not exactly been poor for Luton this season, he has yet to deliver a stand-out performance for Jones' side since his summer move from Derby.

Therefore, the Hatters' showdown with Barnsley represents a great opportunity for the midfielder to win over the club's supporters by playing a pivotal role in securing all three points at Oakwell.

Given that Luton are currently 22nd in the Championship standings, they can ill-afford to suffer yet another defeat as doing so could have a profound impact on what they will be able to achieve over the coming months.
