Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich insists his club deserved a top-two finish in the Championship this season after their place in the play-offs was confirmed over the weekend, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post

A 1-1 draw with Aston Villa Sunday meant that Sheffield United and Norwich City both secured their places in the top-flight but the Polish international has found his club's position hard to accept.

It maybe sounds weird but we deserve to be in the first two," Klich said

“We didn’t make it, that’s football and we have to recover our confidence and go strong for the play-offs because it’s still doable.

"We’re able to be promoted to the Premier League but we’re going to do it the harder way.”

Klich scored the controversial opener against Villa on Sunday afternoon, capitalising on a sleeping defence who expected the ball to be kicked out for the injured Jonathan Kodjia.

It was a goal that sparked a melee in the penalty area, but Marcelo Bielsa defused the situation by allowing the visitors to walk in an equaliser.

Leeds' opponents in the play-offs are yet to be confirmed although it will be one of Bristol City, Derby County or Middlesbrough.

The verdict

I can sort of understand what Klich is saying.

Out of all the sides vying for automatic promotion, Leeds were the most surprising package given the relative lack of changes from last season.

But I am also a believer that everybody who deserves to go up, does and there is no doubt that Sheffield United and Norwich deserved it more in the end.
