Sunderland are interested in signing Sam Winnall on loan from Sheffield Wednesday, with the striker potentially heading for the Hillsborough exit door at this late stage of the transfer window.

Winnall is still rediscovering his fitness levels after a long-term knee injury he picked up around 12 months ago.

According to Dom Howson at the Sheffield Star, Steve Bruce could allow Winnall to leave Hillsborough this evening, with Sunderland a club interested in taking the attacker on board.

Jack Ross lost Josh Maja earlier in the January transfer window, with Sunderland on the lookout for a striker to come in to replace him.

Will Grigg has been on the club’s radar for a lot of the window, and yesterday it was reported that a fifth bid for the striker had been rejected by Wigan Athletic.

Now, it appears attention is turning to other targets including Winnall, who has made only three Championship appearances this season for the Owls.

Last year, the 28-year-old scored six goals on loan with Derby County before picking up what turned out to be a season-ending injury.

Winnall previously had prolific spells with Barnsley and Scunthorpe elsewhere in the EFL.

The Verdict

Winnall is an excellent option for Sunderland and if he can get his fitness levels up after a long lay-off, he would prove to be a superb addition.

If it hadn’t been for his injury he’d be a Championship regular, showing just how much of a coup this’d be for Sunderland.

They might’ve had bad luck in sourcing Maja’s replacement, but this would be worth the wait.
