Sheffield Wednesday were vulnerable from attacks down the flank last season and must look at bringing in reinforcement full-backs. One promising option is Dynamo Dresden left back Philip Heise.

The 27-year old German was said to have caught Wolves’ attention last summer, but a move failed to materialise. If the Owls could convince him to migrate over the North Sea this year, they would smooth over a position that has become a thorn in their side.

Heise has shone since his move to Dynamo Dresden in 2016 and was one of their players of the season in 2017/18. He has achieved this by offering much in all aspects of his game. His penchant for bombing forward saw him record 10 assists, as well as notching 2.1 key passes and 2.0 crosses per game in his latest season. Defensively, he recorded 2.0 tackles per game last season, the second highest at the club.

Meanwhile, Jos Luhukay was unable to settle on a regular left-back. Morgan Fox was the most regular, but Adam Reach and Daniel Pudil also played several games there. Fox’s lack of threat going forward, with a solitary assist and just 0.6 crosses per game, compounded his lack of defensive impact. He made few interceptions, few tackles, and few blocks. It was a season that suggested little progression.

Wednesday’s attack is strong enough to come good. The investment this summer must be on defence. Heise would not cost a great deal, but would provide reliability at the back and a threat going forward.
