Liam Cooper has jumped to the defence of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, after the Leeds United goalkeeper endured an indifferent afternoon against Birmingham City on Saturday.

Leeds’ unbeaten start to the Championship season was ended by Birmingham on Saturday, with Che Adams’ first-half brace setting Garry Monk’s side up for a 2-1 victory at Elland Road.

The first of Adams’ goals saw Peacock-Farrell misjudge the direction of the ball, with the 21-year-old obviously at fault.

Peacock-Farrell’s distribution was also poor, with the goalkeeper probably enduring his toughest afternoon since breaking into the starting XI at the end of last season.

However, Leeds’ captain has jumped to the defence of his goalkeeper, telling the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Bailey’s a young keeper, he’s going to make mistakes and these things happen.

“He’s got to expect that these things are going to creep in every now and again and it’s the way he bounces back from them that matters.

“He’s a strong lad, he’s a great goalkeeper and I’ve told him that. He just needs to not let it affect him.”

Peacock-Farrell has featured in all nine of Leeds’ Championship fixtures, with the goalkeeper keeping Jamal Blackman out of the starting XI.

He’s kept four clean sheets in that time and conceded just seven goals.

Leeds are back in action on Friday evening, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side looking to return to winning ways against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The Verdict

Peacock-Farrell struggled against Birmingham, with the goalkeeper’s performance far from convincing.

The first goal was always going to be vital against the Blues, with the 21-year-old’s concession extremely weak.

The backing Cooper hands him shows the type of captain the 27-year-old is. He has put his arm around him and will be amongst those looking to pump up his confidence over the course of the next week.
