Robbie Willmott has taken to his personal Twitter account to accept an apology from Samuel Saiz, after confirmation that the Leeds United man would serve a six-match ban for spitting at his Newport County counterpart.

Willmott and Saiz were at centre stage on Sunday afternoon, with the duo involved in a controversial incident late in Newport’s impressive 2-1 victory over Leeds in the FA Cup third-round.

Following Shawn McCoulsky’s late winner for Newport, Saiz was dismissed, after he was accused of spitting at Willmott in the aftermath of Newport’s winning goal.

The Leeds ace has subsequently been handed a six-match ban, which Leeds have accepted, with Saiz, 26, issuing an apology to both Leeds and Newport, as well as Willmott.

Willmott has taken to Twitter to accept Saiz’s apology, with the 27-year-old also moving to wish Leeds well with the rest of the Sky Bet Championship season, his message read:

Following their cup heroics against Leeds at Rodney Parade on Sunday lunchtime, Newport have been rewarded with a glamorous fourth-round tie, with Michael Flynn’s side set to host Tottenham Hotspur.

As for Leeds, their attention will turn back to the Championship, where Thomas Christiansen’s side will be looking to mount a promotion push.

The Verdict

It is good to see Willmott playing down the incident with Saiz, as the Newport man could quite easily avoided accepting the apology.

Saiz’s actions were disgraceful, and he is more than deserving of the six-match ban he has received.

Leeds have lost their key man for a lengthy period, which could make his dismissal on Saturday even more damaging.
